1. What Is a Wad?

Wads are cup-shaped plastic containers that are semi-flexible and are designed to hold your shot. The purpose of your wad is to keep your shot and powder separated.

Wads need to perform three important functions.

  • Gives You Good Obturation: Your wad needs to form a gas-tight seal against the heat and expansion of the ignited propellant.

  • Provide Cushioning: Your wad also needs to provide some amount of cushioning of the payload against the extreme acceleration and the firing.

  • Form the Correct Height: Your wad must form the correct column height inside the case to ensure a good crimp.

2. How Do Wads Work?

A shotgun case is made of plastic and it contains both the wad and the shot. When you fire your shotgun, here is what happens.

  1. The case remains inside your gun.

  2. The wad and the shot leave the gun when fired.

  3. After it is fired, the wad starts to loosen and open up as it is flying through the air.

  4. This gradual opening gives you denser and more consistent shots and reduces chaotic collisions.

The following fascinating image shows a series of individual 1/1,000,000 second camera exposures showing a shotgun firing a shot and the wad separation.
